Meet our team
Ms. Nadine Backhaus exemplifies a true educator. She is passionate about teaching and strongly believes in empowering students. Her background in counseling and working with diverse clients has helped her to sharpen her innovative teaching methods. Nadine previously worked at the Virginia Department for Rehabilitative Services in Alexandria, Virginia. In her capacity as a certified rehabilitation counselor, she provided compassionate training and counseling to youths and adults with social disadvantages and disabilities to achieve economic independence through education, job placement, and business development and entrepreneurship.
She has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland, U.S.A., and a Master of Arts in Education and Human Development from George Washington University, U.S.A.
Mahmoud Suleiman was born in Burao and raised in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates where he finished his primary and secondary education. He also has a diploma in Islamic Banking and a degree in Business Management. He moved back to Somaliland in 2009 and worked with different companies, agencies and non-governmental agencies. The experiences he had gained during that time made it easier for him to interact with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
As an assistant to Nadine, Mahmoud joined Burao Academy in August 2017. He has taken on a leadership role, introducing students to a new world of knowledge and possibilities. He is helping Nadine and the school to prepare the young minds to be the leaders of tomorrow. His commitment to give back to his community and country inspires his students.
